Question Tyres for a 996

Now before anyone flames me and says do a search I prefer up to date info as tyre technology moves pretty quick these days. Got Corsa 3's on at the mo. 180 rear. Thing is the profile drops away pretty quickly whereas some other tyres have a more usable tread area. Also the Diablos wear away to the canvas with hardly any warning. Thinking of Michelin Pilot Power 2CT's. I know a lot is down to personal preference, type of usage and suspension set up, but would like to know if there were any negatives about those and any other choices.

Ta.

I have Michelin Pilot Power 2CT's on my 916, and I will be refitting another set when replacement is due, can't speak highly enough of them. The grip, feel, wear, everything seems good, they inspire so much confidence. I have a 190 fitted to the rear though, so can't comment how a 180 would effect the turn in of your bike. But the Michelin' get a from me.

Thanks Andy. I was going to go with the Michelins but my tyre guy says the new Pirelli Rossos will suit me fine. Still wavering though.

Same. 2CT's 180 rear........nice. I like the way this tyre gives me confidence in the damp/wet especially powering up out of roundabouts. I can feel it spin up sometimes but you kinda know it's not gonna let go - difficult to explain but I luv'em.

Try Bridgestone BT016 honestly they are the best tyre I have ridden on, even used them on a track ( Pembrey on a gixxer 750 998 was off the road)
I have converted a few mates and they have all said they are better than 2ct's and they also wear more evenly ( 2ct front can step on the tread grove where it changes to softer rubber)
Uploaded photo of BT016 front shows even wear

Got a pair of Michelin Power Sport 2CT's fitted yesterday in Shipston on Stour. 225 ride in/ride out.

Mikes comment on seeing the front was that any tyre he fitted would be better than that!

What a transformation. I've been struggling to get the bike to turn as I'd like and have raised the rear quite a bit. Now it oversteers, so I'm gonna have to tinker with that and front settings I think. However only done 35 odd miles so will leave for todays 300 odd mile rideout and see how I get on.

Should have tried the BT016's 190/55 rear 120/70 front
BT014 rubber in center,BT015 rubber off center and BT02 rubber on the edge where you need grip
Photo of 190/50 this was before changed to 190/55 as been using racetec's on track and preferred the easier turn in of the 55 profile,

Hello,

I thought that when your wheel was designed for a 180/55 tire you could only install a 180/55 tire.
After having read this thread it seems I'm wrong.
So on my 748s I can safely install 190/55, 190/50, etc? What will be the difference in practice?

The 996 has the same wheels I believe as the 748 and was supplied as standard with 190 rubber, however a lot of peeps change to a 180 section, myself included, because it can aid turn in speed. Got to be a 190/50 I think. Incidentally the front profile as standard is different on a 748 to a 996. 60 verus 70.

Agreed, I heard from somewhere the 190 tyre was OEM on the 9** more for aesthetics
as at the time there was a thing for wide rears and a "mines bigger than yours" thing going on with the manufacturers

it is pretty much regarded by most that it does not handle the way it ought to on a 190 rear.
