clutch plate and basket wear

my dry clucth is very, very noisey, sounds great my mate even knows its my bike before he sees me!!, the clutch does not slip, and it operates fine, i appreciate that i have to change the plates and even basket soon but can it do any other damage? or do i just run it until it starts to slip.

They work OK long after they start to get noisy. If the noise doesn't bother you, just keep running it until it starts to slip or drag.

..if it's not slipping and the noise doesn't annoy you... then carry on with it - it can't damage anything other than your ears !

....and that advice 's from a bloke who just made his into a 'quiet' version .....

I agree with moto748. When I put all new plates in not long ago the basket showed a fair amount of wear but I took a chance and left it in the bike. It's still noisy as hell but there's no problems - at least not yet.

i am sure i have read in post before where people have filed down the bured edges, is there any advantage to it,
ps i like to see peoples faces when they hear the jangling you can definitley hear it above the rumble of the termis I like to think of it as character

think the downside is that the plates can sometimes snag or hang up on the grooves in the basket, giving a notchy, binding feel........filing the worst high spots off may help this.....and boy is that one worn clutch!

That, as Stevel said is one mullered clutch basket. The plates WILL catch in the grooves and then it will get grabby, BUT I see you have a std pressure plate....take it off and hold it up to the light....a pound to a pinch of **** that the bottom of the wells where the springs sit will have split, and that you'll be able to see daylight through the cracks.....that happens when they are left to get as worn as yours.....

Hi all,
yeah, my 900ss clutch is very noisy as well, but it works perfectly, so wont worry, might pay you just to whip of the cover and measure the play, mine is just over 1mm, it has been known to be left up to 5mm,but that is extreem,
Andy

I am in talks with an engineer who has designed a kit for the clutch. He has been running these kits for 15 years for friends and his own Duc's. these can be retro fitted, by anyone who can service thier own clutches, to new or worn baskets/drums and that takes the clank-clank from the clutch.

It also dramatically reduces the wear on basket, drum and plates. You will not get the grooving of the basket and tangs of the plates. The more these wear, the noisier the clutch becomes.

This kit will not help if your friction material on your plates has gone, although it prolongs the life of the plates you do have.

The other benefit of this kit, is that is reduces dust build-up from the clutch, resulting in a cleaner clutch pack and engine, if you run an open clutch cover.

The engine is always "hammering" the clutch, when running, exacebating the problem. This kit reduces the clonking sound and makes the clutch run much much quieter. The only noise from the clutch would be the "jingle" when you pull the clutch lever in.

I have yet to acertain a price for these but it would be a big saving from buying repalcement basket, drum and plates.

It can be fitted to all Ducati dry clutches and it will come with full colour step by step fitment guide. Although it cannot be fitted to slipper clutches.

I will have to get an order of 10 to get an initial production run going.

If anyone is interested please PM me your interest. It may take some organising to arrange this first batch so please bear with me.

I will be removing my STM slipper for the road to fit this kit.

No more "'ear mate your engines goin' to blow up!"

Dan, if I can get this to take off, I am prepared to take out advertising space and also make a donation to the site.

Andy
