Bike: 2000 996 bip
No Spark

Good day to you all,
Could anyone help solve the problem with my 2000 996 bip.
One evening the bike had problems starting but started after a while, but it wouldnt run on idle the bike had to be reved.
I managed to go out for a ride of about 50 miles, put the 996 away only to find that the next morning hit the start button bike turns over but nothing ,so i pulled the coil supply leads off to check to see if i had power to the coils by putting a meter across the terminals and switching on the kill switch ready for the bike to run , but nothing .
I have checked all other wires and electrical plugs and nothing seems to help, any ideas.
Marcus.

Does the fuel pump run for 3 seconds when you switch the ignition on? Both the coils and the fuel pump are powered by the same relay which is initiated by the ECU. I'd suspect the ignition relay first

Many thanks Derek.
Yes the pump dose run and all the relays seem to be working ,
I have also cleaned the crank sensor for good measure but still nothing.

did you try to start the bike with the meter on the coil leads?,i am sure that would help.thats when the engine gets power.not just with the "kill"switch on and the ignition.the start button needs to be pressed to get power to the leads.give that a try mate.

Unhappy

Hi Speno
I have tried cranking the motor with one plug out and earthed but still no spark.

The coils are fed from the same relay as the fuel pump. Unless there is a break in the wire when the pump primes there will also be power to the coils. When the pump stops there is also no power to the coils but when you press the starter and the engine cranks the ECU switches in the relay providing power to the coils and the pump. If you get power to the coils (on the brown wire) while the pump is running then the supply side is OK.
The sparks are created by the ECU switching the earth side of the coils. (green and grey/yellow). You can test this is happening by connecting a test lamp between the battery +ve and one of these wires. For each of them, the lamp should flicker while the engine is cranked. If not there is bad connection between the coil and the ECU or the ECU is faulty.

And it should have occurred to me earlier. The most likely reason for no spark, even if the starter cranks and the fuel pump runs is the crank position sensor. Check the connections to it and check the gap (not that that will change by itself but it may have been marginal all along); The gap should be 0.6mm - 0.8mm. Of course the sensor it self may be faulty.

Talking

Just to let you know the problem turned out to be a faulty relay under the seat , how tipical is that after pulling all of the electrics out and off the bike . Still the old girl is in fine working order now and just coverded 200 miles without missing a beat.
