Shipping Bikes to America

A mate and I are planning to ride Route 66 across the States next May.

We were originally planning on hiring a couple of Harleys but the cost is likely to be in excess of $4500 plus insurance each.

Idea now is to explore the cost of transporting my ST3s and his beemer to the States. Indicative costs seem to be about half the cost of hiring the Harleys.

Has anyone any experience of shipping bikes to the US? If so, what are potential pitfalls /problems?

Regards

Clive

Lots of advice here:
Horizons Unlimited - THE Motorcycle Travel site

also covered in "The Adventure Motorcycling Handbook" which is a good read even if you plan going no further than your local bike meet!

My info may be incorrect but I recall hearing that any imported vehivel into the US had to be steam cleaned and emissions checked to meet their regs. I can't recall if this was only for permanent import or temporary as well.
