I managed Gap (South of Grenoble) to North Birmingham in one hit on a Fireblade back in the mid-nineties - and it ****ed down every single inch of the way!!!

Even managed to fall asleep, still in France, only being woken by the painted rumble strip on the edge of the hard shoulder - very scary.

Promised never, ever, to try anything like it again!!

Funny thing, I got pulled by the Cops, 6 miles from home for riding one handed. I explained exactly what I had just been through and suggested they "got on with whatever they wanted to do" whilst pouring water off my oversuit into their Discovery - they soon sent me on my way.

I reckon 200 to 350 miles is absolutely right.

I have done many trips down thru France, Germany,Italt etc
As stated earlier you can never plan 100% it all depends on the weather type of roads etc, it's always good to have a contigency plan.
Re accomodation if you are heading fot touristict areas there is usually no need to book in advance as the options are always plentyfull not unless there is some special event which takes the availability.
Be aware that the mountain sections can take alot longer than you think and also you can still come across snow in May/June.
I always take some thermals as I have experianced 30c in the valley and 0c at 2,500 mtrs.
It always a good idea to put new batteries in alarms etc as the cold can lock them
have good trips

Gordon.

I live in Switzerland. On my local roads, I can average about 35, on the more open passes 40, though last summer I went to Salzburg via Cortina, and from here (Lugano) to Cortina took 10 hours to go 300 miles, albeit hitting 10 major passes, and stopping for a sandwich at the top of the Stelvio.

I do a yearly 4-5 day trip around first of may with a group of friends in Tuscany, 300 miles is a long day and we are really ragged, 200 is more typical. I've done these trips on my LeMans, ST2, and SS. This year I'll take either my SS or the 999R I just bought (if I can find a reasonable way to attach some juggage to it).

More than 300 miles, you definitely have to do some motorway time.

Hi trust you are well, I've been down your way and over the Stelvio on my 999, I bought a Ventura rack system and fitted to the bike, if you buy the fitting system and sports rack it can sit over the rear seat section and you can strap a bag onto it, saves having too much weight on your back.
Attached is a picture (I hope)
Should be available in Switzerland, fitment takes 30-45 mins initially.
If you want more info drop me aline

perfectly possible, and frankly the experience of a life time but maybe not to be recommended for anything other than a day at a time?!
